When we were having discussions with our international colleagues, we realized that in these financially difficult times, this is an ideal way of collaborating. After all, this is what we all want, to be able to show good new films and old classics to our audiences. We can do it together, as we all need to economize with our finances. Three years have passed before another coinitiative could happen. This time we are joining up with three other festivals.

Již v roce 2008, kdy mezinárodní filmový festival v Rotterdamu (IFFR) představil přehlídku filmů mladých tureckých autorů, jsme přemýšleli, jak takto specifický filmový program zpřístupnit většímu počtu diváků tak, aby si ho mohli užít nejen návštěvníci Rotterdamského festivalu. Štěstí bylo na naší straně, neboť když jsem se o daném nápadu zmínila Christine Dollhofer, ředitelce filmového festivalu „Crossing Europe“ v Linzi, přijala ho s nadšením.

The films in our Red Western programme are based on memories and talks with colleagues. We selected the best titles and/or those films that were enormous national hits. We hope this selection will give you an idea about the times that we (and the directors) lived in. I am very happy to share these wonderful cinematographic memories with you.

Filmy, zahrnuté do přehlídky Red Westerns, jsou založeny na vzpomínkách a diskuzích s mými kolegy. Vybrali jsme ty nejlepší snímky a/nebo největší národní hity. Doufáme, že daný výběr vám pomůže porozumět časům, ve kterých jsme my i režiséři žili. Jsem velmi šťastná, že s vámi mohu sdílet tyto překrásné filmové vzpomínky.

Red Westerns originated during the first years of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (the USSR lasted from 1922 to 1991). At that time, a great many American Westerns were being distributed in the Soviet Union. Lev Kuleshov, one of the pioneers of Soviet cinema, adored these American films about the Wild West and showed them to his students when teaching at the Moscow Film School. When he directed the first Soviet version of a Western, in 1924, he called it The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks.
