Zoltán Fábri – the ‘Japanese PE teacher’, his fairground ride, and  the 1956 Hungarian Uprising

Born in 1917, Zoltán Fábri, the son of a Budapest bank clerk, became one of Hungary’s most prestigious and best loved film directors in a career spanning almost 40 years. As well as his renowned career in film direction, Fábri was also an accomplished painter, set designer, theatre director, and an occasional actor. When Fábri was a young man there was no Film Academy in Budapest and his journey into the world of filmmaking underwent a number of detours on the way.
